Resources

Resources refer to any materials or substances that can be used to satisfy human needs or wants. These can range from natural resources like minerals, water, and forests to human-made resources like technology and infrastructure. Resources are typically classified into renewable and non-renewable categories based on their availability and ability to replenish over time:

Non-Renewable Resources

Non-renewable resources are finite and cannot be replenished within a human lifetime or at a rate comparable to their consumption. These resources are formed over millions of years and once used up, they are essentially gone. These resources include:

  1. Coal: Coal is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock composed mostly of carbon and hydrocarbons. It is a fossil fuel that is formed from the remains of plants that lived millions of years ago. It is primarily used for electricity generation and industrial purposes. It produces greenhouse gases and other pollutants when burned, its use contributes to climate change.

  2. Petroleum (Oil): Petroleum is a naturally occurring liquid found beneath the Earth's surface, composed of hydrocarbons. It is a fossil fuel that is formed from the remains of dead plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. It is used to produce gasoline, diesel fuel, heating oil, and other products. Its Extraction leads to habitat destruction and oil spills have significant ecological impacts.

  3. Natural Gas: Natural gas is a fossil fuel consisting primarily of methane and other hydrocarbons. It is formed from the remains of dead plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. It is a cleaner burning fuel than coal or oil, but it still contributes to climate change.

  4. Nuclear Energy: It is energy released from atomic nuclei through controlled nuclear reactions. It is a low-carbon source of energy. It produces no direct greenhouse gases during operation but raises concerns about radioactive waste disposal and nuclear accidents.

Renewable Resources

Renewable resources are those that can be replenished naturally or through human intervention within a relatively short period compared to their consumption. These resources come from natural sources. These resources include:

  1. Solar Energy: Solar energy is the radiant energy emitted by the Sun. It is converted into thermal or electrical energy. Solar panels are used to capture sunlight to produce electricity and heat for residential, commercial, and industrial use. It is a clean energy source with no emissions during operation but it requires significant land use for large-scale installations.

  2. Wind Energy: Wind energy is the kinetic energy of air in motion. It uses wind turbines that convert wind power into electricity. It is a clean, abundant, and sustainable source of energy.

  3. Hydroelectric Energy: It is the energy generated from flowing water (rivers or dams) that drives turbines connected to generators. It is mainly used for electricity generation. It emits no greenhouse gases during operation, but can alter ecosystems and fish habitats.

  4. Tidal Energy: It is energy obtained from the movement of tides in oceans and seas. It generates electricity using tidal turbines. Tidal energy is a predictable and reliable source of renewable energy, but it is limited to specific geographical locations.

  5. Bioenergy: It is the energy derived from organic materials (biomass), such as plants and animal waste. It is used for heating, electricity generation, and transportation fuels (biofuels). Its emissions depend on feedstock and conversion process. It is a renewable source of energy, but it can have environmental impacts if not managed sustainably.

Role of Individual in Conservation of Natural Resources for Sustainable Life Styles

Topic asked in Energy and Environment 2023 (CBCS/NEP) question paper Section C - 5(a).

  1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3Rs)

    • Reduce: Minimize consumption by buying only what is necessary and avoiding overconsumption.
    • Reuse: Use products and materials multiple times whenever possible.
    • Recycle: Dispose of waste responsibly by separating recyclables and supporting recycling programs.
  2. Energy Conservation

    • Use energy-efficient appliances and lighting.
    • Turn off lights, electronics, and appliances when not in use.
    • Opt for renewable energy sources like solar or wind power if feasible.
  3. Water Conservation

    • Fix leaks and drips promptly.
    • Install water-saving fixtures like low-flow toilets and showerheads.
    • Practice mindful water use in daily activities such as washing dishes and watering plants.
  4. Sustainable Transportation

    • Use public transportation, bike, or walk whenever possible.
    • Choose fuel-efficient vehicles or electric vehicles (EVs) if purchasing a car.
    • Maintain vehicles properly to optimize fuel efficiency.
  5. Support Sustainable Practices

    • Purchase products with minimal packaging or made from recycled materials.
    • Choose sustainably sourced or organic food products.
    • Support businesses and organizations committed to environmental sustainability.
  6. Reduce Carbon Footprint

    • Minimize air travel or offset carbon emissions from flights.
    • Plant trees or support reforestation projects to absorb carbon dioxide.
    • Educate others about climate change and encourage sustainable practices.
  7. Plant Trees and Support Green Spaces: Trees absorb carbon dioxide, improve air quality, and provide habitat for wildlife. Participate in tree planting initiatives or create a green space in your own yard.

  8. Advocate and Participate

    • Join or support local environmental organizations and community initiatives.
    • Advocate for policies that promote conservation and sustainable practices.
    • Participate in clean-up events and community gardening projects.
  9. Educate and Raise Awareness

    • Stay informed about environmental issues and share knowledge with others.
    • Encourage friends, family, and colleagues to adopt sustainable habits.
    • Use social media and other platforms to raise awareness about conservation and sustainability.
  10. Personal Choices and Behavior

  • Practice mindfulness in everyday decisions that impact the environment.
  • Consider the environmental impact of personal choices such as diet, fashion, and leisure activities.
  • Continuously learn and adapt behaviors to reduce ecological footprint.

By taking individual actions to conserve natural resources and promote sustainability, each person contributes to the collective effort towards a more sustainable lifestyle and a healthier planet for future generations.
